How Lasik Works?

The LASIK

technician creates a thin flap in the surface level of the cornea. Once the incision is made, the technician will lift the flap to gain access to the cornea. Reshaping the cornea can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism (refractive error of the eye). The flap will bond to the cornea as part of the recovery process. The description of the LASIK surgery sounds complicated, but the actual procedure takes less than ten minutes per eye. In total, you will be in the office for almost an hour-and-a-half, depending on the amount of correction time and post-procedure follow-up.

No, LASIK is painless. With the help of anesthetic eye drops your eye will be numb, so the only thing you might feel during the procedure is a slight pressure.

In regards to recovery, you may be prescribed artificial tears and mild pain reliever to relieve any discomfort, dryness, or irritation.

You won’t. LASIK requires certain measures to be taken to ensure our technician can create an even flap in the cornea’s surface. That’s why we use an optical instrument to stop your eyelid from blinking during the surgery. Also, an indented headrest creates a snug fit for your head so you don’t shift too much. Right before the flap is created, the surgeon will hold your head in position while you focus on the blinking target in front of you. Our state-of-the-art computer system will be tracking all movements of your eye, so we can adjust the blade or laser if the eye flickers.

iLASIK

The Intralase system means all-laser LASIK, or iLASIK, and is used for the first step of the procedure. In the early days of LASIK, an instrument called a microkeratome, a hand-held spinning razor blade, was used to create the corneal flap. With all-laser iLASIK this step is performed with a special laser called IntraLase which creates a thinner and more precise flap that enables the tissue to heal much faster and with greater strength. iLASIK also permits more people to have LASIK as it resolves some issues the microkreatome was unable to address.

How does ASA work?

During the ASA procedure, the vision correction is performed right on the surface of the eye, rather than under a flap of the cornea. Excimer lasers are used to reshape the front surface of the cornea, which improves vision. For the next few days following the surgery, a temporary soft contact lens is placed in the eye to help with healing.

Even before LASIK was a popular choice for vision correction, doctors performed photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Although PRK offered superior long-term results when compared to LASIK, it typically caused patients more discomfort and a longer recovery time. With ASA, patients still receive the same long-term results as PRK, but with a faster and more comfortable recovery due to advancements made in surgical methods.

While the quick recovery and minimal discomfort of LASIK is attractive to many patients, ASA offers better long-term visual quality and is ultimately safer. ASA is also an ideal alternative to LASIK for patients who:

  • Are looking to avoid LASIK flap complications
  • Have eye pressure problems such as glaucoma or corneal dystrophy
  • Have thin corneas

The entire ASA procedure is relatively quick, lasting only a few minutes. Here is what patients can expect:

  • For comfort, anesthetic eye drops are used.
  • The surface of the cornea (epithelium) is removed with an automated brush.
  • Laser treatments properly reshape the eye.
  • The cornea is then rinsed with a chilled physiologically balanced solution.
  • Until the epithelium regenerates, patients will wear a clear bandage contact lens.

You may be an excellent candidate for ASA if you:

  • Are looking to be free from glasses or contacts
  • Are over the age of 18
  • Have maintained a stable eye prescription for at least a year
  • Do not have any health issues that have an effect on your eyes
