Nearsightedness, Farsightedness & Astigmatism
Correction
Refractive Procedures are used to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

Intacs are an alternative for corneal transplant when your eyes are affected by a keratoconus eye disease. Keratoconus causes thinning of the cornea, which in time deteriorates your vision. Intacs are a great choice when eyeglasses or contact lenses are not satisfactory anymore. Intacs can be used to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism associated with keratoconus.
Refractive Lens Exchange, or RLE, is used to replace the natural lens in your eyes with an Intraocular Lens, or IOL. RLE and IOL allow you to obtain clear vision when you suffer from nearsightedness or farsightedness and eliminate the need for eyeglasses and contact lenses. RLE is an alternative to LASIK and involves a surgical procedure during which a small incision is made on your cornea. The damaged lens is removed and replaced with IOL. The entire procedure takes only 40 to 45 minutes, and you can see the visual improvement immediately. RLE also eliminates a possible cataract surgery in the future.
Visian ICL, also called an implantable contact lens, is an option for those who are not candidates for LASIK. Visian ICL uses an implantable collamer lens, which is implanted on top of your natural lens. The procedure takes about 40 to 30 minutes and is done under topical anesthesia. Visian ICL is used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, and you usually notice improvement in your vision within hours.
Multifocal IOL is used to replace your natural lens that has been affected by cataract or another refractive procedure. Multifocal IOLs can be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, cataract and astigmatism. Insertion of Multifocal IOL is performed under local anesthesia, and the procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes. Recovery usually takes about two to three weeks.
Refractive Lens Exchange is a procedure that corrects vision by replacing the natural lens of the eye with an advanced multifocal or accommodating intraocular lens. The procedure corrects the patient’s vision to clearly see objects across the range of sight, from close up to far away. Because the natural lens of the eye is replaced, patients who undergo Refractive Lens Exchange procedures do not experience cataracts. Refractive Lens Exchange is best suited for older patients, who depend on reading glasses to correct their farsightedness or nearsightedness.
If both eyes are to be treated, Dr. Beyer will only treat one eye at a time, allowing the treated eye to heal before the second eye is treated. The surgeon administers a topical or local anesthesia to the eye. The surgeon then makes a small micro-incision at the edge of the patient’s cornea. The incision typically causes the patient minimal discomfort. For patients with astigmatism, the surgeons at Beyer LASIK may make additional incisions in the cornea to reduce the astigmatism. A special probe is inserted through the incision. The probe is used to break and remove the damaged lens from the eye. Once the natural lens has been completely removed, the intraocular lens is inserted through the incision. The incision does not require stitches. Typically, the procedure is finished within 20 to 25 minutes.
Because the procedure only requires a small incision, the recovery time is quick. Patients are not required to limit their activities, and generally return to normal activities one to two days after the procedure.
Some patients report mild discomfort after the procedure. Patients may experience inflammation of the cornea or retina, sensations of increased pressure in the eye and droopy eyelids. These symptoms should resolve as the eye heals.
The staff was so so helpful scheduling me last minute. The technician was thorough, kind, and mindful of her work (Kay). Thank you all!
